Safety of industrial substances and processes The transport, storage, and use of substances or mixtures such as explosives, flammable solids, liquids, or gases, pyrophoric substances, oxidizing substances, hydroractive substances, and any energy-containing materials may generate accident risks. INERIS' mission is to assess the accidental risks of products and processes and propose mitigation measures To this end, it characterizes and assesses the physical and chemical properties and hazards of substances, both individually and in mixtures, and quantifies the hazards. It also assesses the risks associated with interactions with processes during the various life stages, such as storage, manufacturing, use, treatment, disposal, and destruction. The Institute uses its testing and modeling resources, as well as bibliographic databases, to assess product hazards in accordance with applicable regulatory standards. As a notified body, INERIS also assists manufacturers with the risk of explosive atmospheres (ATEX). It verifies the flammability and combustibility of powders, liquids, and gases and analyzes the risks of ATEX formation in order to establish appropriate ATEX zoning for the facility.
