Transportation of hazardous materials and pipelines

INERIS is designated as the national competent authority for the transport of dangerous goods (TMD) of various classes: classification, approval, authorization of containers (packaging, IBCs, tanks, etc.).

It assists the ministry responsible for the environment in developing, updating, and enforcing regulations. For many years, the Institute's contributions have covered various areas, including:

  • assessing the hazardous properties of chemicals or objects containing hazardous substances (e.g., lithium batteries);
  • improving testing methods for specific energy materials (explosives, oxidizers, TDAA for organic peroxides and self-reactive substances, etc.);
  • providing technical support for conducting transport infrastructure hazard studies.

For many years, INERIS has also provided technical assistance in assessing and controlling risks associated with pipelines for transporting hazardous substances and distributing gas, as well as indoor gas installations. In addition to its support for regulatory developments, the Institute contributes to improving knowledge of risk analysis methods and assessing the safety implications of injecting hydrogen or biomethane into networks.
