The kick-off meeting for the European MEMO (Methane Monitoring of Abandoned Coal Mines) project, in which INERIS is a partner, will be held on October 15 in Ostrava (Czech Republic).

Funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS), this project aims to develop robust methods for measuring and monitoring methane emissions from abandoned coal mines in Europe. This involves evaluating existing measurement tools, designing new adapted sensors, and proposing a common methodology for estimating annual methane flows in order to meet the requirements of the new European regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 13, 2024).

Ineris' role in the project

Leveraging its expertise in post-mining operations, Ineris will play a central role in developing the methodology for establishing the inventory and estimating methane emissions from former coal mines by leading the dedicated work package. The Institute will also contribute to the design and testing of innovative sensors and measurement tools adapted to different types of emitting structures (shafts, galleries, boreholes, etc.). It will also contribute to the work and proposals for data centralization, drawing on its experience in developing and operating web-based monitoring systems (https://cenaris.ineris.fr platform).

This project is coordinated by GIG (Central Mining Institute, Poland) and brings together the following partners: KOMAG: (Institute of Mining Technology, Poland), UMONS (University of Mons, Belgium), THGA (Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola, Germany), VUHU (Brown Coal Research Institute, Czech Republic), IMG-PAN (Institute of Mineral and Energy Economy, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), ISSEP (Scientific Institute of Public Service, Belgium), POLTEGOR (Poltegor-Institute, Poland) and Ineris.
