In late 2022, a new standard was published under the IECEx international certification scheme for electrical and non-electrical devices installed in explosive atmospheres, for the certification of industrial systems using hydrogen as an energy source (IECEx OD 290). It specifies the safety requirements for devices, components and systems, including hydrogen distribution stations for businesses and individuals.

In March 2023, Ineris, of all of the certification bodies recognised by IECEx, submitted one of the first applications to certify these systems.
The institute has the laboratories and test resources needed to assess these devices. It will be audited in September 2023 in order that IECEx may qualify it for this new certification domain.
In addition, Ineris is already doing pre-certification studies – including those involving compliance with the CE label – together with the main industrial players in this field, namely device manufacturers, new technology integrators and end users.
IECEx is a globally recognised certification scheme whose objective is to facilitate the trading of devices and services used in explosive atmospheres, while maintaining an adequate level of safety. 36 countries are currently IECEx members.
