Launched in 2023 for a 4-year period, the REECOL project aims to ensure the environmental sustainability of coal-mining regions in transition by developing solutions for the rehabilitation and long-term monitoring of former mining areas.
It is coordinated by the Polish Poltegor Institute and brings together eleven partners from five European countries (Greece, France, Poland, Slovenia, Czech Republic), including research institutes and industrial companies such as coal mining companies.
At the progress meeting held at the end of September, the Institute presented the work it is carrying out as part of WP4 (“Development of new solutions for post mining land reclamation and their testing in case study areas”). This work consists of carrying out analyses to characterize soil-plant pollutant transfers, the agro-physical-chemical and biological properties of soil, and carrying out botanical inventories on the Mazingarbe workshop site (Pas-de-Calais), in order to identify degraded soil functions and propose new and innovative nature-based solutions to improve them.
This approach is consistent with future land use and climate change considerations.
