Alternatives to Bisphenol A in thermal paper – European workshop in Brussels

With the aim of prohibiting the use of bisphenol A in thermal papers with effect from 2 January 2020, the Belgian public authorities, in collaboration with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), organised a meeting in Brussels on 26 March to discuss the replacement of bisphenol A (BPA) in thermal papers.

At this meeting the Institute presented the new regulations for the voluntary certification of products as “BPA-free” and “no phenols added”. The regulations of the Ineris voluntary certification scheme have been amplified and now cover the entire supply chain. They offer a more robust system by integrating in particular the distributors and the processors.
Ineris will also participate in a round table discussion on safe, sustainable alternatives to thermal paper containing BPA.
This event brings together the stakeholders in the thermal paper supply chain: the manufacturers of BPA substitutes, the manufacturers/importers of thermal paper (whether they use BPA alternatives or not), the users of thermal papers, the research organisations, the administrations, NGOs, unions and industrial associations.
